The average cost of motorcycle insurance in the US is $519 per year. However, according to data from JD Power, costs can range from $400-$500 depending on various factors. In short, some motorcyclists may pay up to $1,000 per year, while others may pay around $100 per year.

Like car insurance, motorcycle insurance has state minimum liability requirements in most states, with the option to add more coverage. Also, like car insurance, motorcycle insurance gets more expensive with more coverage and lower exemptions you have to pay if you have an accident.
Motorcycle insurance is more economical than car insurance. However, prices can vary greatly depending on your insurer’s view of the matter. In most cases, insurers enforce the fact that even a minor motorcycle accident will result in large medical debts or the driver will die (not necessarily property damage). These same data lead different insurers to charge more or less for the same basic coverage.
In general, a motorcycle insurance policy has the following five types of coverage, according to the Insurance Information Institute:
The state minimum policy means you only purchase one of these five types of coverage. If you are underinsured, you can cover these costs out of pocket if you are involved in an accident.
A Beginner’s Guide To Types Of Motorcycles
Like car insurance, less experienced riders should expect to pay more for motorcycle insurance. For example, 18-year-old drivers often have higher rates than someone in their 30s with a clean driving record.
Gender also plays a role in the cost of your insurance. According to data from JD Power, an 18-year-old man who buys a policy can pay $443 at GEICO, while a woman can only pay $339 at the same company.
The type of bike you plan to ride also significantly affects the amount you pay. According to JD Power, the value of your bike, its safety features, accident rate for that model, and theft rate are all factors that are considered when determining your premium.
Similarly, consider upgrades or customizations. Brands like Harley Davidson can customize your bike to your preferences long before you see it. However, your insurance will only cover the base model unless you purchase extra coverage for customizations.
Motorcycle Security And Anti Theft: Ways To Save Your Bike
Like car insurance, traffic fines can affect the amount you pay for motorcycle insurance. A traffic ticket on your car or bike will affect the price you pay for motorcycle insurance, according to Progressive.
If you have a history of making claims, you may also see an increase in your premium. Insurers may even refuse coverage for your motorcycle if you have too many claims on file.
In some areas, drivers may only require insurance coverage for a limited driving season. This does not automatically kick in. However, you can reduce your coverage in the off-season to cover collisions that are extensive, but not necessarily, among other things. If you’re going to make this move, read your policy carefully because even a single off-season ride can put you at risk for uncovered damage.
If you plan to ride all year, make sure your insurance agent knows you plan to keep any coverage you purchase active all year.
Average Cost Of Motorcycle Insurance (2023)
Premiums may vary depending on your provider. In the table below, the cost of insuring a bike is cheapest with Progressive and most expensive with Foremost. However, this rate may vary depending on your age, location and other factors. To get the best apples-to-apples comparison, take the time to research each company’s credibility and what each policy entails.
Some states are more expensive for motorcycle insurance coverage than others. Like car insurance, state laws mandating coverage can affect the cost of your motorcycle insurance.
Another factor that affects the cost of your premiums is the winter conditions of your state. In some parts of the USA, motorcycle riding is seasonal. Coverage tends to be less costly in states with harsh winters, such as New England and the northern Midwest. The better the weather in your state, the more you will pay for motorcycle insurance because you will be riding motorcycles for the greater part of the year.
Saving on motorcycle insurance may take a little extra work, but it can be well worth it. Here are three moves that can lower your motorcycle insurance bill.

Like any other type of insurance, shopping can help you find the best rate. Every company handles your personal information and needs differently, and every insurer will price your policy differently.
Get quotes from several motorcycle insurers and see which company offers you the most coverage for the lowest premiums and exemptions.
Even if you’ve been riding for years, brushing up on your riding knowledge is never a bad thing. Many insurance companies will also offer you a discount if you have taken a motorcycle safety course in the past five years.
Some insurers, such as the Harley-Davidson Owners Group, offer discounts for car owners or members of driver groups. Talk to an insurance agent about lesser-known discounts and savings opportunities you may be missing out on.
