Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment Deadlines – WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumers looking for state-subsidized health insurance for next year have until Wednesday to sign up if they want their new plan to start Jan. 1.
Independent experts say the HealthCare.gov application season doesn’t seem likely to bring in as many new customers this year — down 8% to 9% from last year — but it’s too early to draw any conclusions because deadlines are a big part of enrollment.

The open application for the Affordable Care Act is different this time because it is an early test of President Joe Biden’s idea that the U.S. can move closer to coverage for all by building on existing programs.
Ny Health Marketplace Sees Record Enrollment, Extends Deadline To May 15
Wednesday is the first of two deadlines for HealthCare.gov coverage, with more financial help available through Biden’s coronavirus relief legislation. The last chance will be January 15th for coverage that starts on February 1st.
People who are already enrolled do not need to do anything. If they are satisfied with their current plan, they will be automatically renewed through 2022. HealthCare.gov and its state partners are insurance marketplaces that offer private coverage that is subsidized by taxpayers.
About 91% of the US population currently has health insurance through a combination of employer, public, and individual plans, but 28 million people remain uninsured in the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most would be eligible for taxpayer-subsidized coverage, but research shows that many simply aren’t aware of it.
After the application season, experts say new enrollments are slightly behind last year’s numbers in the 33 states served by the federal HealthCare.gov website. The rest of the states and Washington, D.C., are running their own enrollment campaigns.
Update: Open Enrollment Further Extended — The Coalition For Hemophilia B
“It doesn’t really look like the market is growing rapidly,” said Cynthia Cox of the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. That’s a “disappointing sign considering so many more people are eligible for free or low-cost coverage” under Biden’s COVID-19 relief law. The president’s proposed welfare agenda would extend these increased subsidies.
Administration representatives say they are not concerned about the numbers. Health and Social Affairs Minister Xavier Becerra told reporters on Tuesday that more than 5 million people have already signed up or actively renewed their coverage.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recommends that those who delay the deadline enroll in their community by midnight local time. The 2023 Open Enrollment Period (OEP) begins on November 1, 2022 and ends on January 15, 2023 in most states.
The table below shows the 2023 OEP dates for states using the federal ACA exchange. Coverage begins on January 1. If you have a special enrollment period, coverage begins on the first day of the month after enrollment. For example, if you sign up on February 15th, your coverage will start on March 1st.
Aca Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment Deadline Is Sunday
Some states with their own ACA exchanges have different date ranges for the 2023 open enrollment period. The table below shows the SEP and OEP dates for those states.
*In Washington, DC, residents can start coverage immediately. For example, if residents sign up by June 30, they can choose to have coverage begin on June 1 or July 1.
If you missed your state’s enrollment deadline, it may still be possible to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that will allow you to apply for health insurance. You can qualify for SEP if you have experienced a qualifying life event. Qualifying life events may include:
See the list of qualifying life events. If you qualify for SEP, you have 60 days to enroll in the plan. But if you miss that 60-day window, you’ll have to wait until OEP to enroll in an individual health insurance policy for 2023.

You qualify for SEP, you can apply for a short-term health insurance plan. Short-term health insurance can be purchased outside the OEP for up to 364 days, and in most states you can reapply for short-term coverage for up to 36 months. Short-term health insurance plans can be a good, temporary fit for healthy people because they won’t cover pre-existing conditions like Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans.
You qualify for SEP and decide not to apply for a short-term health plan, you will have to wait until Open Enrollment 2023 begins in fall 2022.

Submit your application by the applicable Covered California deadline so the insurer will consider the specific effective date. In this way, you will beat the rush and ensure time for all necessary corrections in the application.
Almost anyone can sign up, renew a plan, or change a plan during open enrollment. The effective date is determined by the date the plan amendment application or request is submitted. This chart does not reflect open enrollment dates for each year, so double check before making plans.
