As with Macy’s department stores, the Macy’s Credit Card offers a big draw. it gives you rewards and discounts on countless items to enhance your home, wardrobe and life. But if you look closely at it, the shine fades. The card has a complex rewards structure and limited redemption options.
5 Things To Know About Macy’s Credit Card
There are two main versions of the Macy’s credit card: a closed-loop card, which you can only use at Macy’s, and an open-loop American Express card, which you can use anywhere American Express is accepted. Neither card comes with an annual fee.
Macy’s Reportedly Experiencing Credit Card Problems
Macy’s credit cards come with tiered rewards, meaning rewards depend on how much you spend at the retailer.
With the open version of the Macy’s card, you also earn rewards on purchases outside of Macy’s; 3% back at restaurants, including delivery; 2% return at gas stations and supermarkets; and 1% back on everything else.
Note that if you don’t have a Macy’s credit card, you can join the loyalty program as a Bronze member and earn 1% rewards. The loyalty program includes “Star Cash Bonus Days” where you can earn faster rewards. Cardholders also receive a 25% discount on Star Pass from time to time.
Once you accumulate 1,000 points in your account, you’ll receive a $10 Star Cash Reward that you can use to shop at Macy’s, both in-store and online. (This means each point is worth 1 cent.) Rewards cannot be used for gift cards, Macy’s Beauty Box subscriptions, or services such as change.
How To Use Macy’s Star Rewards And Earn More Star Money
You also face a limited period of time to use the rewards. Star Money is only valid for 30 days after it is issued. Compared to other credit card rewards programs, this is a very short redemption window. For example, points earned with Amazon’s Prime Visa never expire as long as the card is open. Like many store cards, the Macy’s credit card comes with a discount when you open it. You get 20% off total purchases up to $100 made on and after your card is approved. (Discount does not apply to certain purchases, including Apple products and gift cards.)
When you shop at Macy’s with your Macy’s credit card, you automatically get free standard shipping with no minimum purchase requirements. However, some items are excluded, such as furniture, mattresses and carpets.
Plus, you’ll get a birthday “surprise” every year on your birthday, provided you’ve used your card to shop at Macy’s (in-store or online) within the last 12 months. Anecdotally, cardholders have reported receiving $10 off purchases on their birthdays. However, you may have to go to a Macy’s store to purchase your gift.
